GREEN SPACE DESIGN

‘A Modular, Multi Use Campus Space For Socialising, Work and Relaxation’

This design concept includes different areas for working, socialising, relaxing and biodiversity. Unconventional ways of planting are used to create the biodiversity areas that are designed to attract different insects to this area e.g. butterflies and bees.

The concept was designed for the layout of a roof terrace on top of the Nicola de Haye building at the University of Lincoln. However, it can be implemented in any other space because of the flexibility that the modules give. It can also be personalised to the space and the main user needs.

Introducing the Modules

  • Modern Social Area

In this social group area a maximum of 6 people can sit in this space. This social area is a modern area that uses hydroponics to create an enclosed space by using the plant walls as the edge boundary to create privacy within the space. By using hydroponics this space teaches the users about sustainability.

  • Recycled Social Area

In this social group area a maximum of 6 people can sit and have a chat on their breaks. This social area will be made out of recycled materials such as pallets and an old tyres. This roof terrace is promoting sustainability and recyclability and the materials for this area would be provided locally to the roof terraces.

  • Relaxation Pod

The relaxation pods are where the users can come to get away from the world and sit and relax surrounded by nature. I used biomimicry when designing the chairs for the space. I wanted the user to feel safe from the world when sitting here, so I designed the chair around a bird’s nest as these are strong structures where the chicks are protected from the world and the weather. The user can sit inside the nest chair and feel safe and protected. The hanging element of the chair is used because it has mental health benefits, such as, using the pressure points in your back to help to calm down and de-stress, this also helps you concentrate more on work.

  • Working Pod

The working pods are sheltered spaces, where up to 6 people can work together. These pods are sheltered from all angles, so laptops and papers can be used in this space all year round. The front and back sides of this module are see through, so other people know if the space is in use or not. It also makes the most of the natural light. This also allows the users to not feel so boxed in and can connect with nature. I wanted a space to work outside as it has benefits to the way people work, as it is found that people concentrate more and more ideas are generated.
